Dr. Leila Sadien

Dr. Leila SadienWhat does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

Before science existed, healing was an art form. Healers were called to medicine because of their intuitive talents to heal. Modern medicine then placed in it the hands of scientists who made profound discoveries that reshaped the world. I believe that both were necessary at the time, but we are now in a time where integration is required when we have the tools to truly utilize the best of both worlds. By integrating ancient intuitive knowledge of the body and natural medicine with the miracles of modern medicine, we do not only provide relief but also profound holistic healing.

Dr. David Nye

What does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

Western Medicine places too much emphasis on clinical trials. Without discarding good science, we need to cultivate the art of becoming good healers and doctors, using intuition and love without fear of reproach.

Biography

Dr. Nye graduated from U.C.T. with an MB.ChB. in 1979.

In general practice at The Greenhouse Holistic Health Centre in Observatory [1983-2008], he soon found it necessary to explore beyond the bounds of conventional Western Medicine and started using herbal and other natural remedies in his practice.

Between 1985 and 1998 he underwent training in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Homeopathy, Metal Toxicology and Functional Medicine.

Dr. Nye was the chairperson of the S.A. Complementary Medical Association [SACMA] until its closure in 2002. He co-chaired the S.A. Homeopathic Medical Association and is the current chairperson of the SA Society of Integrative Medicine [SASIM].

He is currently registered as both a medical doctor and a homeopath.

In the practice, he addresses chronic ill health issues by forming a team with the patient to uncover the root causes of his/her problems. A variety of treatment modalities are employed, including homeopathy, ozone, intravenous therapies, chelation and Rife RPX frequency treatments.

Born in 1955, he is happily married for 39 years with 2 sons and 4 grandchildren.

Dr. Bernard Brom

Bernard Brom

What does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

Art is subjective, science is objective. The Integrative doctor uses both subjective (feeling, knowing/intuition, thinking) tools and the more conventional measuring tools (laboratory measurements, x-ray, MRI etc) to assess the whole person (body, emotions, mind, spirit, consciousness and matter-energy-information-quantum).

Science alone is too limiting to encapsulate the whole person and ends up dealing only with that part of the problem which can be measured. This latter approach does not deal with the person but with ‘the disease’.

Biography

Dr Bernard Brom is a medical doctor who has spent his life finding ways to help the body in its innate ability to heal, supporting health rather than just treating disease.

Dr Brom qualified as a medical doctor in 1965, and started an integrative medical practice in 1977. He became a specialist in the non-drug treatment of ill-health, and studied Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbal medicine and homeopathy.

Dr Brom was chairman of the South African Acupuncture Medical Association and the founder and chairman of the South African Society of Integrative Medicine (SASIM).  He has written extensively on integrative medicine, both in medical journals and in his monthly newsletters.

In 2017, he published a book titled “Healthy Medicine.” He founded the Journal of Natural Medicine in 2000.

He currently teaches medical doctors a 4-day intensive course on Principles and Practice of Integrative Medicine, writes two newsletters a month for professionals and one for lay people, and continues to have a special interest in the Science and Art of Medicine.

Dr. Hema Kalan

Hema Kalan

What does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

Although science forms the basis of medicine, it is the intuition, knowledge,  creativity and heart-centred approach of the physician that ultimately charters a healing journey for the patient.  This happens when the art and science of medicine come together.

Biography

Dr Kalan’s ‘medical career’ began when, at 8 years old, she joined the Red Cross Society. The sense of peace she felt while assisting patients ignited in her from early on the knowledge that she would be a healer someday. This dream came true in 1998 when Dr Kalan qualified as a medical doctor (MBBCH) from The University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa.

A few years passed and Dr Kalan began to feel uneasy about the way she practiced medicine, only treating the symptoms. Luckily, she discovered that there was a way to practice that embraced both the natural and allopathic methods of medicine with a strong focus on lifestyle as the foundation. This is integrative medicine. It aims to cure and prevent illness by treating the “root” cause of illness.

Dr Kalan’s passion is education and she has given several talks on wellness to a variety of audiences. She has appeared as a medical expert on the well-known South African current affairs programme, Carte Blanche. She has also contributed to articles published in the Sunday Times, Longevity magazine, and other publications.

What does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

The Art and Science of Medicine covers the full width and depth of the human experience – not just the material, visible science of molecules you can see under a microscope and how nutrition, general health and lifestyle impact on that, but includes also quantum science, so the roles of energy, emotions, mental constructs and how they impact on health.

Both the bigger picture and the details. Health in all its complexity and in constant flux.

Biography

Elma Pollard is the SASIM administrator and organiser, a writer, quantum energy coach and editor of her green news platform, the Green Times.

Catherine Barnhoorn

Catherine Barnhoorn

What does The Art and Science of Medicine mean to you?

I can best explain using the example of Food as Medicine. The food you eat either harms you or heals you through nutrients, macros, insulin response etc. This is nutrition, it is a science. But we are also nourished through: our life purpose, relationships, spirituality and movement. This is soul food, it is an art.

art [ ahrt ]- noun

the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance.

Biography

Catherine Barnhoorn is mom to Mila, a certified integrative nutrition health coach and award-winning author of ‘Mila’s Meals: The Beginning & The Basics‘. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and psychology, a diploma in marketing and visual communications and a certificate in health coaching from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She is an active member of The South African Society for Integrative Medicine (SASIM) and works as a health coach, online educator, consultant and speaker focusing on topics including Food as Medicine, Gut Health, Childhood Nutrition, ‘Free-From’ Feeding, Nutrient-dense Foods, Picky Eating and Primary Food.

Catherine believes that food can be the “best form of medicine or the slowest form of poison”* and she is on a mission to inspire, enable and empower parents to optimally nourish their children and themselves. She sees her and her daughter’s food intolerances as a blessing which has led them down a path of learning, discovery and good health – which will hopefully stand them in good stead for years to come.
